Deathly Hallows: Part 2 hits $1 billion-mark, is highest-grossing Harry Potter film

As of Saturday, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 grossed $1 billion, becoming the highest-grossing Harry Potter film in international markets of all time. The biggest moneymaking Harry Potter film before this was the first in the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, which brought in $974.8 million internationally back in 2001-2002.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is also the ninth movie ever to break the billion dollar mark. Of the billion made, 68 percent came from international markets, including in the U.K., Japan, Australia and Germany.

Deathly Hallows 2 passes Sorcerer's Stone as top-grossing Harry Potter film in U.S.

The box office numbers for the weekend of July 29-31 are in, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has surpassed Sorcerer's Stone as becoming the highest-grossing Harry Potter film in the U.S. and Canada. The domestic take of Sorcerer's Stone after its theatrical run in 2001-2002 was an estimated $317.6 million; as of Sunday, July 31, 2011, Deathly Hallows: Part 2 brought in $318.6 after 17 days of release, with its numbers set to go higher as it continues its run.

 

And for the weekend of July 29-31 Deathly Hallows: Part 2 came in fourth place in the domestic box office, bringing in an additionally $22 million dollars, and has well past the billion-dollar mark in takings worldwide - the ninth to do so all time.

The final and updated box office numbers for this July weekend were released, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which had already broken several records since its release, in fact took in more than it was estimated on Sunday. On the international scale, Deathly Hallows: Part 2 took in $481.5 million - $5 million more than originally projected - and brought in $169.2 million in the United States and Canada, slightly more than the original $168.6 million forecast.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 shattered the opening weekend domestic box office records, taking in $168.6 million in the U.S. and Canada, this weekend. The final installment in the Harry Potter series brought in $476 million, also breaking the opening weekend box office internationally. The previous domestic and international records were held by Warner Bros.' The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, respectively.

In terms of international market breakdown (converted to United States Dollars), Deathly Hallows: Part 2 took in $36.6 million in the UK, $26.7 million in Australia, $25.7 million in Germany, $23.9 million in France, $19.5 million in Russia, $15.1 million in Italy, $11 million in Korea, and $21.5 million in Japan.

Heads of Warner Bros had this to say on the record weekend.

It is impossible to quantify how thrilled and grateful we all are that both critics and audiences—especially loyal Harry Potter fans—continue to support the film. Rowling, as well as producer David Heyman. We applaud them all.” Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, President of International Distribution, remarked, “Harry Potter is truly a cultural phenomenon the world over. Whether in German, French, Japanese, Russian, or any language, international audiences have embraced the Harry Potter films over the years, with the powerful finale punctuating just how special the property is. Merely hours after the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in theatres and IMAX across the globe, and the finale already shattered box office records. The last Harry Potter film broke the midnight opening records, taking in $43.5 million alone in the U.S. and Canada, and $126 million globally from Thursday evening's showings. and In less than 36 hours after its release, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 shattered a second box-office record, this time the one day box office sales in the U.S. and Canada, taking in $92.1 million on Friday, its opening day.

The previous one-day box office holder domestically was the second installment in The Twilight Saga, New Moon, which took in $72.7 million over a year ago. The film made an additional $82.5 million internationally just through Thursday evening sales. The finale's next target is the weekend domestic box office record, currently held by 2008's The Dark Knight, which brought in $158.4 million three summers ago. We will have full weekend box-office numbers, both domestic and international, by Sunday.

Deathly Hallows: Part 2 also broke the IMAX sales record for Thursday night opening, making $2 million domestically.
