Jang Geun-seok up for indie movie Human Time
by tineybeanie

Jang Geun-seok (Jackpot) is considering starring in award-winning arthouse director Kim Ki-duk’s (Arirang, Pieta) new project called Human Time. Well-respected veteran actor Ahn Sung-ki (Trot, The Hunt) has already confirmed, and Ryu Seung-beom (Intimate Enemies), whose last movie, The Net, was also a collaboration with Kim, is in the final negotiation stage.

Details regarding the plot of the film have not been released, but the basic premise is that the movie will metaphorically show how humanity has changed and survived to become its present-day concept. Judging from the director’s past works, I think it would be safe to say that Human Time will be deeply contemplative, with unique ideas on the themes presented.

Compared to Ahn Sung-ki and Ryu Seung-beom, Jang Geun-seok’s movie filmography is relatively short, mainly composed of coming-of-age stories and rom-coms, although there was The Case of the Itaewon Homicide which I thought was exciting and displayed his acting range the most. I have a soft spot in my heart for Jang Geun-seok because he was one of my first drama crushes, starting from his playful maknae days in the sitcom New Nonstop to one of his first drama roles as an adult (he got his start as a child actor), Beethoven Virus.

However, his recent projects have been rather disappointing, from his last movie, 2011’s You’re My Pet, which was a remake of a Japanese drama by the same name, to his past two dramas, Jackpot and Pretty Man, which were terrible. So I’m hoping that he’ll find a way to reinvent himself again and expand his acting abilities through this new project.

Filming for Human Time will begin later this month.

Jang Keun-suk to return to big screen with Kim Ki-duk's film

SEOUL, May 22 (Yonhap) -- Actor Jang Keun-suk will return to Korea's big screen with award-winning director Kim Ki-duk's new film, his management agency said Monday.

Tree J Co. said Jang has recently confirmed his appearance in "The Time of Humans." It will be his first film in six years and first work with the auteur.

Kim's 23rd feature film is about a journey to get to the root of human beings while testing the limits of human emotions, morality and ethics.

Jang, who will play alongside Ahn Sung-ki, one of the most established and respected actors in Korea, is said to show a different acting style in this film where he plays a cruel and cold-blooded character.

"It's been a while since I did a film, and I am so honored to work with director Kim Ki-duk whom I respect," the company quoted Jang as saying. "I've decided to join because it appealed to me to play the most instinctive side of human beings."

The actor will start shooting at the end of this month.

Kim Ki-duk
Highest Rated:   95% Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring (2003)
Lowest Rated:   33% Arirang (2011)
Birthday:   Dec 20, 1960
Birthplace:   Bonghwa, South Korea
One of the most controversial Korean directors, Kim Ki-duk is a self-taught filmmaker who prides himself on his outsider status, openly setting himself apart from contemporaries like Hong Sang-soo and Lee Chang-dong, who he considers too intellectual. Kim's films have drawn vitriol for their subject matter and praise for their technique, and he has often been compared to his predecessor Kim Ki-young, who was also self-taught and whose films bear a much less brutal, but equally eccentric, personal stamp. Born in a mountainous village, Kim moved with his family to Seoul at the age of nine. During his teenage years he dropped out of school and worked in factories, and at the age of 20, he began a five-year stint in the marines, the toughest and most demanding branch of the Korean military. These early experiences would inspire the gritty milieu and dim view of human relationships that characterize his films. A painter since childhood, Kim went to France in 1990, where he studied art and scraped together a meager living by selling his paintings on the streets. Kim returned to Korea in 1993 and began writing screenplays. Despite his lack of formal education, he achieved early success in screenplay competitions and soon moved into directing. His first two films, Crocodile (1996) and Wild Animals (1997), were violent, angry portrayals of alienated young people. His third film, Birdcage Inn (1998), introduced one of his recurring themes -- prostitution -- which, in Kim's profoundly disenchanted world view, seems to represent the normal state of affairs between men and women. While that film brought more lyrical elements to his style, it was 1999's The Isle that was his real breakthrough. Balancing pictorial beauty with at times stomach-turning imagery, it tells the story of a mute prostitute servicing fishermen at a lake resort. It brought him attention at international film festivals and was his first film to be distributed in the United States. He followed it with Real Fiction (2000), a not entirely successful experiment shot in 200 minutes on the streets of Seoul using ten film and two video cameras that follows a young man trying to track down and kill everyone who's done him wrong. Set in and around a United States army base, his 2001 feature Address Unknown examines the troubling legacy of the Korean War. Kim's next film, 2001's Bad Guy (which earned him the sobriquet "the bad guy of Korean cinema"), was his most popular and controversial, partly owing to the fact that its star, Jo Jae-hyeon, who worked on five of Kim's previous films, had become a television celebrity by the time of its release. The story of a mute thug who kidnaps an innocent college girl and forces her into prostitution, Bad Guy was widely reviled as misogynistic, and is all the more troubling for the intensity of its images. Kim drew on his experiences in the marines for The Coast Guard (2002), in which a young recruit suffers moral anguish following an accidental shooting. His 2003 feature Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...And Spring was, for many, a surprising turning point in Kim's artistic output. Set in a stunning landscape, it portrays the lives of two Buddhist monks and the lost souls who come to them for solace. A much more mature film than his previous efforts, it nonetheless focuses on the essential brutality of human nature. It marks a new phase in the career of a brash, undeniably talented filmmaker.
