First Details and Media: Suikoden's Online Mode
New local and Wi-Fi modes add endless content to Tierkreis on DS.

February 10, 2009 - We've been hinting for a while that there's more than meets the eye with Suikoden: Tierkreis on Nintendo DS. Wireless was an obvious route to take on the game, and earlier hands-on we've had with the title have mentioned – briefly – that players can expect some sort of multiplayer aspects in the game, and today Konami is revealing exclusively with IGN just what those details include.

Since Suikoden as a series has always been about having massive amounts of playable characters (108, to be exact), Konami is expanding on that design with Suikoden for DS. In the latest game, adventurers that want to expand their gameplay out of the single player realm and into a more user-connected community can do that via "Infinity." This story-supported crossroads of sorts is a place where users can drop off their characters in parallel worlds (other DS players), and have them hired for online-specific quests. Once a character is "hired" from one DS to the other, a specific amount of time is given to complete the mission.

Upload a hero to the "Infinite" online area...

The original owner of the character will have to go without their hero for a short time, continuing on with the main game away from any need of wireless communication, and at the end of the mission (either when successfully finished, or after a specific time limit) the original owner will get their outcome with the character based on the other player's progression.

... and get the report back when the mission is over.

Not only does this allow users to farm out characters to other players in need of a higher level fighter, or let players try out fighters they may not have in their own game, but it also gains both users unique, Wi-Fi specific items for their efforts, and all the experience and quest items that come with along with it.

Online Features:

    * Exchange characters via Wi-Fi.
    * Receive trade goods by clearing quests.
    * Receive rare items as rewards by clearing quests.
    * The exchanged character can get experience.
    * Receive rare items only available in the Wi-Fi mode.
    * Unique boss battle that is only available in the Wi-Fi mode.

We'll have more on the wireless mode, as well as updated hands-on and media, later this week. Suikoden: Tierkreis hits store shelves on March 17 at an MSRP of $34.99

Dragon Quest IX Delayed in Japan
Square Enix pushes major release back and slashes earnings estimates in the process.
by John Tanaka

February 12, 2009 - Square Enix sent shockwaves through the Japanese games market today with the surprise announcement that Dragon Quest IX will not make its original March 28 release date. Instead, players will have to wait until July 11.

As reason for the delay, the company cited the discovery of major bugs in the game. It attempted to make the requisite fixes without changing the date, but determined that more time was necessary.

This delay has to come as a blow to all involved parties. For fans, Dragon Quest is one of Japan's biggest games, with some expecting part IX to sell five million units domestically. For retailers, main Dragon Quest games tend to sell upwards of two million units in the first two days of sales. Most major retailers had already opened up pre-orders for DQIX, with some even promoting special 7:00AM opening times.

For Square Enix, the damage is a bit more measurable. The company's Square Enix Holdings parent issued revised earnings forecasts for the year 2008 today. Citing a delay in the release of a major March game, the company lowered sales forecasts from 160 billion yen to 133 billion and operating profit forecasts from 21 billion to 12 billion yen.

Square Enix will detail its full earnings report for the first three quarters later today, and will also likely share further comment about the DQIX delay.

Dragon Quest IX to Support "Surechigai" Wi-Fi
Exchange data with other players even when your DS is shut!
by John Tanaka

February 11, 2009 - Details are continuing to emerge on Dragon Quest IX's support for wireless play. Joining the local Wi-Fi multiplayer play and the recent announcement of downloadable quests and item lists, Square Enix announced today that the game will feature a "surechigai" mode.

Surechigai is the official Japanese name for that DS feature that lets systems exchange data with one-another even when the lid is shut. Games like Nintendogs and even Dragon Quest V support it. Square Enix hasn't given an English name for the DQIX mode yet, so we'll stick with surechigai for now.

In DQIX, this feature is used to do background character swaps with other players whom you might pass by, for instance, at a busy train station. The exchange occurs completely in the background, although you need to have first set your DS into the surechigai mode by speaking with Rikka at Rikka's Inn in the main town.

Visiting player data appears in the form of guests at the inn. You can speak with the guests to view a special message that the other player has entered in advance and also see stats about the other player, including play time and battle count. You can also view a player profile here, which offers such information as location, birthday, and job (either real life job or in-game job).

Your DS can hold up to three guests at any given time. Leave your system in surechigai mode, and you'll continue to shuffle out these guests with other players.

There's some incentive to keep on getting new guests in this fashion, as Rikka's Inn sees interior upgrades as your guest count goes up. In addition, you may find yourself with new treasure maps, given as an automatic gift by visiting players.

This is just the latest in a growing feature set for DQIX. Square Enix continues to share new details weekly as the game's March 28 Japanese release approaches, so be sure and check back soon!

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games revealed !

With their success, Sega and Nintendo make a new covenant with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. The two famous heroes find themselves once again in direct competition here but with a change destination for environments snowy Vancouver, Canada. Always planned for Nintendo DS and Wii, Shigeru Miyamoto regards development of the title. Each version will receive special treatment in order to more closely match the capabilities of consoles. However, the multiplayer experience is no doubt the main asset of the license as it did for its predecessor. A futur commercial success, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games will leave nothing to chance.
