Nintendo Announces New Nintendo 3DS Portable System

Nintendo has announced its newest portable hardware, the Nintendo 3DS (a name which is marked as "temp" in the brief press release issued by the company.) This new handheld is planned for launch in Nintendo's next fiscal year, which ends March, 2011.

The new hardware is not an update to the original, 2004-launched Nintendo DS hardware -- as its Lite, DSi and DSi XL have been. According to the press release, the new platform will "succeed" the Nintendo DS -- which stands as Nintendo's most successful hardware platform ever.

The platform will allow users to play 3D games without the need for special glasses, the release said. No details on this technology, nor other aspects of the platform, beyond its backward compatibility with existing Nintendo DS and DSi games, was revealed.

Pricing and software lineup details are also presently undisclosed.

The release promised that more details will be revealed at Nintendo's E3 press conference. The E3 show begins June 15, 2010.

Fire Emblem Remake Coming To DS
DS will be getting a new Fire Emblem game in Fire Emblem: Monshou no Nazo Hikari to Kage no Eiyuu (Mystery of the Emblem: Hero of Light and Shadow).

Nintendo updated the Fire Emblem official site today announcing the new game. Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem was released in Japan on the Super Nintendo in 1994. Noy much info is revealed at the moment, not even a possible released date on Japan or America.

Enjoy the Trailer

Fire Emblem Mystery of the Emblem: Hero of Light and Shadow [DS]

Nintendo Shares Fire Emblem DS Details
You're the hero in this second DS remake. All about the new "My Unit" feature.

Nintendo unveiled the latest DS Fire Emblem game last week, but didn't share any details. Now, with the opening of an official site, we have first solid details on the game.

Fully titled, translated to English, "Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem -- Hero of Light and Shadow," this second DS Fire Emblem game is a remake of the first Super Famicom Fire Emblem game. You take control of Marth, Prince of the Altea Kingdom.

The DS version actually changes things up some as far as characters go. The main character is a "My Unit" character whom you create and customize in such areas as gender, name, face, hair style and unit type.

While the story still seems to follow Marth (it wouldn't be much of a remake if that wasn't the case!), the My Unit character will feature in a new Prologue sequence which follows your character's path from joining the Altea Army to becoming a soldier fighting alongside Marth. You'll also be able to unlock side stores for the My Unit character. These are played on new maps.

Some features carry over from the first DS Fire Emblem game, released outside of Japan as Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon. You'll be able to face off against other players in Wi-Fi and wireless battles.

Japan will get this latest Fire Emblem game on July 15, priced at 4,800 yen. Releases outside of Japan have yet to be announced.

'Permadeath' is Optional in Next Fire Emblem Game

Fire Emblem is one of those games that could be considered a nightmare for a completionist due to one certain feature.  Let’s say you’re in a battle, and your archer bites the dust.  In most games you could send out a Phoenix Down or some other healing device, and he’s fine.  That does not hold true in Fire Emblem.  Dead means dead.  The next installment in the series, Fire Emblem: Hero of Light and Shadow, is a total game-changer, as it is making this optional.  As RPG Fan points out, this new feature is pretty crazy:

“The permanent death of characters in battle has been a series staple for Fire Emblem games in the past, but had the tendency to alienate casual players. Now those players will be able to enjoy the story without having to worry as much about losing one of their favorite characters to a lucky shot from a hidden archer. This change is completely optional, so die-hard fans of the series will still be able to maintain a tradition of permadeath 20 years in the making.”

Could this help bring in a wave of casual fans to the series?  Probably not, but it’ll definitely win over some folks that may have tried the series but found it too intense.  Aside from this, another new feature being added is a character creator of sorts called “My Hero.”  You create a character for use in the prologue, and you can later add the character to the main party.  Both modes are making this game look like a sure buy!

E3 2010: Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
We're ready for our third trip with the professor and his trusty apprentice.

Nintendo unveiled a LOT at its press conference, but the company had so many new games that not everything got highlighted. One such game was the third title in the Professor Layton series, which is called Professor Layton & the Unwound Future.

The demo we saw took place right at the start of the game. Layton and his apprentice Luke are at the unveiling of a time machine. After chatting with the townspeople -- and solving the game's first puzzle, where you need to help a security guard figure out which table a gate-crasher is sitting at -- the ceremony begins.

Dr. Alain Stahngun, the inventor of the machine, brings up the resident dignitary Prime Minister Bill Hawks to assist him in demonstrating the machine's capabilities. However, things don't go as planned (or do they?), and the time machine, prime minister, and inventor vanish from the stage.

Luke and Layton decide to travel to London to investigate what happened, and to also figure out why a number of prominent scientists have been disappearing.

The gameplay looks like it holds steadily to the formula established in the first two games, but for fans of the series, that's a very good thing. And start sharpening your noggins now -- the game hits store shelves this September 20.

E3 2010: Animal Crossing's Got Depth
Nintendo's virtual life game is being prepped for 3DS, and we get a small peek of it in action.

There are very few "playable" games on the 3DS at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Most of the demos are little more than interactive shows, either running in streaming video (like Capcom's Resident Evil and Nintendo's own Kid Icarus: Uprising) or using real-time game engine assets like Mario Kart. Animal Crossing for the 3DS was revealed as in development, but at the show all that's here is a real-time demo that you simply watch.

But at least you get to see how well the stereoscopic LCD can display the familiar Animal Crossing world. The "rolling log" effect of the game's world is in effect in this version as you watch one of the Animal Crossing humans wander the terrain and bump into the occasional animal -- one of which was a bear that I've never seen before in any of the prior Animal Crossing games, leading me to believe there will actually be new creatures to encounter.

Foreground rock, background house. All 3D.

The human wandered into a house filled with all sorts of furniture, and the game automatically shifted the camera closer to the character and rotated it around so that the viewer can see all the items in this abode. Again, the stereoscopic effect worked well here. Subtle, but helpful.

What's most noticeable is the insane increase in texture detail. The game might be running at 30 frames per second when compared to the Wii's 60 FPS, but the detail of the grass and the furniture is far, far superior to what's going on in the Wii version. Even when the camera swooped in for a close look inside one of the animal's houses, you could pick out the detail on the checkerboard and sofa.

There was nothing in this demo to indicate if the actual Animal Crossing design will be anything more than what it's been on the Nintendo DS and Wii -- after playing through both of those games at length I'm ready for a fresh life in an animal infested village.

E3 2010: Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater 3DS is Delicious
Though it's not really playable, it's one of the best demos at the show.

The 3DS is a pretty amazing piece of kit, but there are very few "must see" games at the booth beyond the demos of stereoscopic 3D without the need for glasses. If there was one demo I'd recommend anyone see over everything else, it'd definitely be the demo for Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater.

The demo, like 90 percent of the 3DS software at the show, is not playable…but it is interactive. Players can move the camera around with the 3DS system's analog slide pad at specific points in the action. The demo is running in realtime, and it shows just how detailed the 3DS visual capabilities can be. This is the first generation of 3DS software, and already it's impressive.

The demo is slow crawl through the jungle where the camera will push through the foliage and slide along an enormous crocodile – this really shows off the texturing and lighting effects of the engine used in the game. Eventually you'll meet up with Snake and watch him bolt across a rope bridge after being pursued by a swarm of deadly jungle bugs. After a quick bit of acrobatics to show off the amazing depth of the 3DS system's stereoscopic display, you hit the title screen that shows off even more stereoscopic 3D in the title itself.

The graphics look on par with (or even better than) the PlayStation 2 version of Snake Eater – developers told us prior to the debut of the 3DS that the hardware is well beyond Wii and approaching 360/PS3 capabilities with what the system can do, and when you see this demo in action you can see why they would have said that.

No game details were revealed for Snake Eater – it was just a non-playable demo.
