Button: Who knows? Maybe we can

Jenson Button has not ruled out a third straight win in the Australian GP despite his new MP4-26's mediocre performance in pre-season testing.

The 2009 Champion, in an interview with his team's official website, said: "Albert Park has been good to me: I've won there for the past two seasons.

"It's a great circuit for racing, it always seems to create unpredictable races.

"And, perhaps because it's habitually at the start of the season when a precise pecking order has yet to be established, we often see fast cars running out of sequence - and the excitement that that brings.

"With the added issue of multiple tyre stops, it could be a very exciting and unpredictable race weekend."

On his prospects for next Sunday's season-opener he added: "I'm regularly being asked if I can make it three wins in a row this year.

"On paper that might not look likely, but, seriously, who knows? I most definitely wouldn't rule it out."

He said he had added motivation this year after the triple trauma suffered by Japan of last Friday's earthquake, tsunami and radiation scare.

"I go to Melbourne this weekend resolving to not only try my best, but also to salute the brave people, and my many friends, throughout Japan."

His team-mate, fellow Briton and 2008 Champion Lewis Hamilton, conceded that on paper at least, McLaren faced a tough task to cope with the speed shown in testing by the likes of rivals Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes.

"We can't hide the fact that testing has been tougher than we expected," said Hamilton, who won at Albert Park in 2008.

"Our test mileage hasn't been as high as that of our rivals, nor have we had the outright pace of the fastest cars.

"Still, I have a good feeling with MP4-26: I like driving our car, I think it will look after its tyres quite well and I understand that we'll be making further performance steps ahead of this opening race.

"Nevertheless, we know we go to Melbourne ready for battle: some teams are extremely well prepared - both from a pace and reliability point of view - but that can sometimes count for little in the unpredictable and somewhat chaotic opening races where it's equally vital just to take points home.

"I strongly believe that, while our preparations haven't gone as smoothly as we'd have liked, I get the impression that we'll be arriving in Melbourne with everything finally meshing together - and that makes me really excited."

Team principal Martin Whitmarsh acknowledged that McLaren would not figure among the favourites to win in Melbourne, but he echoed his drivers' optimism that a decent showing was possible.

He said: "Do I think our testing pace is representative of the pace we'll show in Australia? No.

"Do I think we head into the weekend as race favourites? Unfortunately, no.

"But do I feel that we have the capacity to surprise a few people and be competitive? Very much so."

Button: Reliability issues solved

Jenson Button is confident McLaren have sorted out the reliability issues which dogged the MP4-26 during testing and believes mileage on Friday will be key to their success at the Australian GP.

Button and team-mate Lewis Hamilton didn't get enough laps under their belt after the MP4-26 broke down several times during testing. In fact McLaren's new challenger covered the fewest miles of all the teams.

Button is hoping to put that right during practice at Albert Park on Friday.

"We're doing a lot of mileage on Friday and I think that's going to be key for our weekend," he told the Australian Associated Press.

"We've done half of the top teams in terms of laps. It's not been easy to see what the performance of the car is.

"I think we have solved our issues of reliability we had earlier in testing, now we've just got to get some good miles in on Friday before the race."

Despite the team's mediocre pre-season and the form of Ferrari and Red Bull, Button hopes he can make it three Australian GP victories in a row.

"We're not as prepared as what we'd like to be," he said.

"You'd say that we're not in such a good position like the Ferraris and the Red Bulls, but you never know when it comes to racing, things change around.

"We might surprise and I might get my third victory in a row.

"I still think the pace of the car is pretty good, we don't know just how fast at the moment but we have a very strong team and I think if anyone is going to find the best out of a car and get the best out of it on race weekend it's definitely the Vodafone team."

Should he make it a hat-trick on Sunday then he will emulate Michael Schumacher.

"Michael has done it (won three Australian Grand Prix's in a row), I've already checked... so that's very disappointing, but he's alright as a driver," Button joked.

"It would be pretty high (on my list of achievements).

"Winning the World Championship is the one that stands out, but winning three times on the same circuit is a nice feeling because it shows that you own that circuit.

"I really like (the Melbourne track) and when you get a car that's hooked up round there it's such a nice feeling, it really is.

"It's a fun circuit considering it is basically a street circuit. It's a very fast going circuit, I enjoy it here and I hope our car enjoys it too."

Button frustrated by penalty

Jenson Button was left frustrated after a penalty for cutting a corner while overtaking Felipe Massa ruined his chances of challenging for a podium at the Australian Grand Prix. He finished sixth in the end, but felt that did not represent his pace after an impressive drive back through the field.

Button was fighting for fifth with Massa when the incident happened and was struggling to get past despite having a faster car. Entering the high-speed chicane at turns 11 and 12, he led Massa into turn 11 but then had to back off and was behind the Ferrari on the entrance to turn 12. With nowhere left to go, he cut the corner and took the position.

There was no doubting that Button gained a position by leaving the track, but he argued he had already got ahead of Massa heading into turn 11.

"I got stuck behind Massa [at the start] because I got a poor exit out of turn one and that was the worst move of the race because he was so slow and he's the most difficult person to overtake," Button told BBC Sport after the race. "He blocked very well, but it just slowed us both down massively. I tried to overtake him in turn 11 and 12, he went so deep into the corner and he pushed me wide and I couldn't go round the corner any more so I cut the corner. I was in front before we entered the corner and then I didn't know what to do."

McLaren then contacted the FIA to ask if Button should give the position back, but did not get a response before Massa pitted and made it impossible to reverse the order. Team boss Martin Whitmarsh said his team was stuck between a rock and a hard place.

"I'd say Felipe was reasonably spirited in his defence and I think Jenson felt he had no alternative other than to leave the track when he was trying to get past him," Whitmarsh said. "At that point we asked the FIA 'What do you want us to do?' We got no advice and then we were then told we had a stewards' enquiry."

Button said his was race was ruined once the drive-through penalty was issued.

"The team said stay where you are we'll see what the stewards say, but as soon as Ferrari saw that happen they pitted Massa, and as soon as that happened we got a drive-through," he added. "I don't know if that was done on purpose or not. I got a drive-through and then had to fight my way through, which was quite fun but being that far back is very frustrating because the pace was much better than that."

Massa shrugs off Button's criticism

Felipe Massa races against Jenson Button in MelbourneFelipe Massa and his Ferrari team are unmoved by criticisms from Jenson Button and McLaren about the intensity of their battle for position in the Australian Grand Prix.

Button claimed Massa had pushed him off the track during their fight - which had forced the McLaren driver to take to an escape road, for which he subsequently received a drive-through penalty.

But despite Button's claims that Massa had defended too hard, the Brazilian reckoned he had driven within the rules – and said it was right that Button had been penalised.

"It was a good fight, no?" said Massa. "I was holding my position and he was not able to pass me.

"He tried many times and I was able to stay there many times. Then, when he passed me, he passed me in a not allowed situation. He had to give me back the position or they penalised him, which was the case."

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali believed the stewards had acted in the right way with Button – despite having been the victim of similar circumstances last year when Fernando Alonso was penalised for not giving a position back to Robert Kubica when he cut a corner at Silverstone.

"I think that to be honest, that situation was quite straightforward," explained Domenicali. "We had it in Silverstone and I think the approach of the stewards was correct after I saw after that Jenson cut the chicane.

"The new rules are stronger. It is not just the International Sporting Code now; it is in the sporting regulations that you have to respect the line of the track. For sure the approach would have been different if Jenson would have let Felipe pass."

respek gw ke massa hilang seketika. kok gw ngerasa ada aroma kesombongan di ucapanny ya? hah -_- :P

testing... back.. :P

Confusing afternoon for Button

Jenson Button admits it wasn't all plain sailing at the Malaysian Grand Prix as the different strategies made things a little confusing.

The McLaren driver, who started fourth on the grid, claimed his first podium of the 2011 season with a second-place finish behind Sebastian Vettel.

However, with most of the front-runners opting for three-stoppers, Button feels it was difficult to know what was going on around him.

"It was a really confusing race in a way, understanding or trying to understand the pitstops and whether it is worth looking after the tyres or not, so pretty tricky," said Button.

"In the last stint putting the prime tyre on, the car came alive, I had so much more grip. I had a feeling the tyre would not go the same way as the prime tyre."

"I had so much more grip and I had a feeling that the tyre wasn't going to go the same way as the soft tyre, and my pace was much better in the last stint. It was a fun race, a couple of really good battles. "

Although he is delighted with P2, he admits he wanted to push Vettel a little harder in the end.

"I was happy to come away with a second, I had the team telling me to back it off and look after the tyres," he said.

"But, in a racer's mind you want to push as hard as you can and try and catch the leader. Even though it was not really on, I had to give it a go. I had a lot of fun out there, and great to get 18 points.

"A big thank you to the whole team for doing a magnificent job today with the pit stops and the strategy. I think we've made some good progress, so I think looking forward to China we should be excited and hopefully we can challenge these guys (Red Bull)."[/b]
