The Good Wife Round Table: What Should Kalinda Do?

Welcome to the third edition of The Good Wife Round Table.

Following another riveting episode of the best drama on TV, editor-in-chief Matt Richenthal is joined below by fellow TV Fanatics Jeff Kirkpatrick and Carissa Pavlica. Feel free to jump in with your opinion as they dissect various aspects of "Killer Song."
----------
What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Matt: Go back and watch Kalinda's reaction when Blake says he knows about her and Peter. There's this quick, subtle look of shock and horror on Kalinda's face. It's sudden and it's acute and it's a look we've never seen on Kalinda before, and it speaks to why Archie Panjabi is an Emmy winner.

Carissa: When Kalinda found out Blake gave an ASA the information that she slept with Peter, she called Alicia immediately. It cemented for me their friendship, considering her comfort in phoning Alicia when the topic at hand could not be revealed to Alicia.

Jeff: The scenes between Eli and his daughter are probably an obvious choice, but their tug of war over the news items and Eli's annoyed reactions to her socio-political views were priceless. It also highlighted Eli at his cynical best: "America doesn't suck. People suck."

Should Kalinda just come out and tell Alicia the truth?

Matt: Of course. But only after a bottle of wine or two dozen.

Carissa: Yes. In spite of any possible aftermath, she did not know Alicia and was not the married one. She has to tell Alicia before Peter does, because to hear this about Kalinda from Peter would be far more devastating to Alicia than hearing it from someone else about Peter. Her expectations of her friendship with Kalinda are set higher than her expectations of her marriage to Peter.

Jeff: I think so. She owes Alicia the truth, especially when she already lied to her when asked point blank in the past. If there is any chance of maintaining a relationship, Alicia needs to hear it from Kalinda and no one else. Alicia will be angry, but she has already proven herself a forgiving person. I think she has the capacity to put herself in the other's place and understand the circumstances. Kalinda was clearly desperate to eliminate her identity for whatever reason, and Peter obviously took advantage of her desperation. Kalinda was almost as much a victim as Alicia.

Preference for Cary: as a friend or foe of Lockhart/Gardner?
Matt: Neither. He was never a friend to the firm before and he isn't a foe now. What makes this show so unique among primetime dramas is its ability to paint its characters with a layered, grey brush. Cary hasn't changed a bit from his days of working with Alicia to his time now working against her. He's just been doing his job all along.

Carissa: Friend. The fabulous trio of Alicia/Kalinda and Cary is what makes the show such a pleasure for me to watch. I truly believe that lawyers working together achieve better results for their clients than when they are fighting against each other without regard for the actual people being represented in their cases.

Jeff: Friend all the way, although Cary will always be out for himself. When he was at L&G before, he blended a perfect combo of smarm and charm, and that's what I miss. As an ASA, he's done a great job and has held high moral standards with regard to his cases, even if he's had a darker and more sinister agenda to stick it to his former bosses. He'll likely never be best pals with anyone at L&G, save for perhaps Kalinda, but I like seeing him on the same side of the table with our favorite firm.

Who ended up winning the quasi air hockey game between Zach and Grace?
Matt: I gotta go with Zach. Assuming this game did continue after dinner, he probably asked her what Jesus would do, got her off on a bible rant and took advantage of her distracted demeanor. He probably won a close contest by two or three goals.

Carissa: If you take into consideration their father was late for dinner because he was covering up another lie about his past, they both lost.

Jeff: To be honest, I was so fixated on Alicia and her happy exterior that I didn't really pay much attention to Zach and Grace. But I like Carissa's answer.

The Good Wife Review: A New, New Day

I had to chuckle when Stern said "A new, new day. Sounds like you have one of those every few months." That statement seems the slightest bit meta, since The Good Wife manages to tout game changing events on a semi-regular basis.

Louis Canning's arrival as the successor to Stern's firm, during "Wrongful Termination," would have had more impact had it not been revealed in the previews, but every time Canning is around there are surefire antics to be had. This time was no different. I honestly didn't care that much about the trial itself, that of a large corporation guilty of trying to induce employees to voluntarily leave in order to fleece the pension fund, because I was more interested in the fluctuations that the death of Jonas Stern caused in the attitudes and thinking of those affected.

Ironically enough, his passing delivered more than a few comical moments, such as the mounds of potato salad containers at Stern's wake. I suppose potato salad is the go-to comfort food for people in mourning. It's funny, because it's true.

That canary-eating look between Will and Diane as they lamented Stern's passing then confessed their shared ill-timed opportunistic thoughts had me in stitches. It's been interesting to see the dynamic between Will and Diane change from combative to that of genuine ease and comfort, ever since plotting to evict Bond from the firm. I rather enjoy the cozier countenance the two share over a glass of brandy or whatever their libation of choice may be.

Will appeared to undergo a large metamorphosis, going from stammering "I need some help here" as he tried to figure out what Tammy wanted from him (what guy hasn't been there?) to asking Tammy not to take the job in London upon reflecting on Stern's lack of any real legacy. I don't care much for Tammy. Maybe it's Elisabeth Reaser in the part, I don't know, but she just doesn't feel like a good fit for Will.

Nevertheless, it would seem Will has made the leap from just messing around to wanting a fully formed relationship with her. Or perhaps he's just afraid of being alone.

Despite Alicia's statement to Tammy that things were over between she and Will a long, long time ago, her body language tells a different story. The leering glance as Will approached Tammy in his office. The sparkle-eyed chuckle as she told Tammy Will likes to think he's still a kid, but he's not. She's still very much on the hook where Will is concerned…she just can't do anything about it. Yet.

The news about Peter and Kalinda's one-night affair is about to reach the breaking point. I still am fuzzy on how Petra found out about Peter's dalliance with a co-worker, but she's all ready to blow it wide open. Kudos to Eli for stamping out her inflammatory interview with Alicia, and in glorious form too.

Between that and his opening blowup with the DCC Chairman, I'm getting rather used to seeing Eli lose his cool. It certainly makes me laugh.

With Childs' minion and his talking-lion telephone breathing down his neck, Cary is walking a difficult tightrope. Will his allegiance to his job outweigh his allegiance to Kalinda? I think he's more inclined to tell Childs where to go. That scene of Cary pleading to Kalinda that she should have opened up to Alicia about the affair told me all I needed to know.

Whether it's from a romantic or brotherly standpoint, it makes no difference: Cary loves Kalinda. I think he'll defend her with his dying breath.

Would Alicia really leave Lockhart and Gardner? She has to be at least considering it. Canning's offer is at least the second she's received in a matter of weeks; that has to make her curious what it would be like to move on, especially at a much higher salary.  Her contemplation in her office before Eli interrupted leads me to believe she isn't ruling anything out.

That's a new, new day I hope we never see come.

The Good Wife Promo: "Foreign Affairs"

On this week's installment of the The Good Wife, a former partner passed away, a familiar face returned to challenge the firm and make Alicia a tempting offer, and Will contemplated a change in his life choices. You can read all about it in our review.

Looking ahead to next week, are more potentially game-changing events on tap?

Lockhart/Gardner reps a small drilling contractor in a dispute against an oil conglomerate. All goes according to plan until a South American dictator takes over the case.

Meanwhile, the election results are in ...

The Good Wife Review: One Word Changes Everything

It was election day on The Good Wife and though the case may have surrounded "Foreign Affairs" the domestic ones were far more interesting.

Alicia got blindsided. Was Wiley just fishing for a reaction when he came to see her?

Alicia was sitting there with her glass of wine having a private moment. Friends, family and colleagues were celebrating Peter's win. She had not only survived the eleventh hour television interview, her performance may have won her husband the election. And then with one name, her world crumbled.

If Kalinda had planned on telling her, she waited too long. Kalinda's a smart woman.

She had to know that if this secret was going to come out, odds were it would happen before the election. As the two friends stood by the elevators you could tell that Kalinda wanted to come clean, she just couldn't bring herself to do it.

With Wiley's casually uttered comment about Leela it all disappeared, Alicia's new start with her husband, her new best friend. It was all based on a lie. Alicia walked down that hallway looking as though she'd been sucker punched.  In essence, she had.

Surprisingly the final scene, although wonderful, wasn't my favorite of the episode. That honor went to Will as he watched Alicia's interview. I was expecting him to view it in disgust or frustration. Instead all I saw on his face was admiration. He's not only attracted to Alicia, he respects her.

Perhaps as Alicia's world falls apart, Will will take Kalinda's advice and tell her how fantastic he really thinks she is. I'd bet fantastic is the last thing she feels.

Although this episode certainly didn't need a guest star, I couldn't believe they had Fred Thompson play Hugo Chavez's lawyer. I never saw that one coming. Insert crazy dictator here for comic relief.

And enough with the 'in my opinion' judge. The gag went on too long. It's time to let it go.

The only comic relief I needed was in the looks Cary leveled on Kalinda. It was so amusing watching him try and walk the line between friendship and self preservation. "Don't tell her you slept with Peter before you put in a good word for me. OK?" Only Cary could pull that off and still make me like him.

The highlight of the case for me was America Ferrera as Natalie. She's been a joy to watch and I've loved her awkward but sweet interactions with Eli. I was sorry to see her storyline come to an end.

So how does Alicia pick herself up this time? What's her next move? Does she confront Peter? Call out Kalinda? Or will she take her time and weigh her options? Watching this smart woman figure it out will be fascinating TV. I simply can't wait to find out what what comes next.
