Rafa Nadal challenged his fans to Throw the ball further than him in the interlude of Mallorca-Athletic

The Spaniard tennis player  Rafa Nadal, number two in the world, challenged his fans to throw a tennis ball farther than him in the interlude of the match between RCD Mallorca and Athletic Bilbao (0-0)
This initiative, from the Sportman fragrances,  met at the stadium Majorcan ten people, chosen by a draw after registering on the website of the challenge: 'www.elretosportman.com'.

The participant who after two attempts managed to throw the tennis ball farther,  clashed in a final duel with Rafa Nadal,  to whom the initiative has seemed a great idea because "it allows you to 'keep in touch with the fans '.

The winner, Robert Montmany, received the 'Certificate of Champion Challenge Sportman' and sports equipment valued at more than 500 euros, but failed to overcome Rafa Nadal in the final duel.

Nadal awaits Chennai Open

World No. 2 and three times French Open Champion Rafael Nadal is all set to play in the Chennai Open starting on 31 December. Having lost a closely contested semi final match to the competition’s ultimate winner, Xavier Malisse, last year, he is determined to clinch his maiden Chennai Open title this time around. Afflicted with injuries this past year, he has recovered and is “raring to go.” Following are excerpts from an e-mail interview he gave Sharmistha Chaudhuri.

The Statesman: How is your knee injury?
Nadal: I am feeling fine now. I am physically and mentally fit and raring to go now.

The Statesman: What are your primary goals for 2008?

Nadal: I would like to be more consistent on grass and one day look at winning Wimbledon. I came close to doing it this year but was a bit unlucky. I think every tennis player dreams of winning it one day, don't they? It would be a beautiful moment to have success there. It's so special.

The Statesman: In the new crop of young players, including Djokovic, Gasquet and Murray, who do you think is most likely to be a threat to the domination of the circuit by you and Roger Federer?
Nadal: It's very difficult to single out any one player. The top seeded players are so competitive that anyone can beat you. The point is that you have to be good; stay focused and keep improving all the time.

The Statesman: Who do you think has the most challenging game on the circuit?
Nadal: Well it's got to be Federer.

The Statesman: Off the court, what gives Rafael Nadal most enjoyment?
Nadal: I like playing football, and it has been my favourite sport besides tennis. Other than that, I enjoy spending my time playing PSP and golf, fishing, and going out with my friends in Mallorca.

The Statesman: What are the things other than sports that you are interested in?
Nadal: I like simple things. I like fishing on a boat. I like being with my family.

The Statesman: Whom, other than Carlos Moya, do you admire?
Nadal: I admire Roger Federer. He is a great player on the court and an excellent person outside it. He's a very complete player. He's got every right shot. Federer, for me, is the best player. He is an amazing player. I have a good relationship with him.

The Statesman: Who has been your greatest influence and you're your biggest critic?
Nadal: I think I owe it all to my uncle and my coach Tony. He has been greatly instrumental in shaping my career and getting me this far. In my formative phase, it was really hard. When I used to go for training, I felt upset. He always put tons of intensity in the training, always yelled at me a lot, he was always on my case... I guess all of that's helped me to be who I am and to have so much self control. He's a very special person, who thinks a lot and if you listen to him, says things that aren't the usual. I also would give a special word of mention to my friend Carlos Moya, who has always given me valuable advice and support when I needed it.

The Statesman: How do you motivate yourself when you are two sets down and fighting to stay in the match?
Nadal: I always go to play a match with the intention of giving it a hundred per cent. I try to maintain my intensity throughout the match, whether it is two sets up or two sets down and battle for every point and stay mentally focused till the end.

The Statesman: Why do you not play doubles more often even though you have won three doubles titles?
Nadal: I won my first major title in doubles at Chennai in 2004. I know I have not been concentrating on it for the last few years. I surely would like to improve on this aspect. Hopefully, I can start from Chennai again.

The Statesman: Tell us about your fitness regime.
Nadal: I work more on the court. I have a special trainer and a physio. I also concentrate a lot on my physical training because I think it's very important to be 100 per cent for your game.

The Statesman: Are you looking forward to playing in Chennai again?
Nadal: Yes!! I am looking forward to playing in Chennai Open 2008. The tournament is a great event and the enthusiasm of the crowds is very encouraging. Fans there really enjoy their tennis. The tournament has become very popular on the ATP circuit and the organisers, IMG, are doing a great job providing excellent player facilities. I hope to win my first Chennai Open title this year. I had some injuries this year but I am confident that I would make a good start to the New Year and improve my performance, playing in this tournament.

The Statesman: Do you have any advice/ message for India's aspiring tennis players?
Nadal: Life is full of challenges. No work is a bed of roses. Just enjoy the game and enjoy the competition and keep improving on all aspects of the game. Display the true sportsman's spirit, passion for excellence and the desire to learn.
