2013 Forbes China Celebrity 100 List: Fan Bingbing in Top Spot

2013 Forbes China Celebrity 100 List: Fan Bingbing in Top

Fan Bingbing (范冰冰 ) is the most influential celebrity in the Greater China region, according to the 10th Forbes China Celebrity 100 list which was released today.

Earning 110 million RMB last year, Fan Bingbing climbed to the top spot for the first time. Jay Chou (周杰倫) is in second place with 104.2 million RMB in earnings, while Andy Lau (劉德華) is in third place with 47 million RMB.

The annual Forbes China Celebrity 100 list ranks the most influential entertainment and sports celebrities from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Since Forbes factors in earnings as well as exposure rate from sampled print and digital media, the highest earner is not automatically the most influential celebrity. The top earning artist is actually Donnie Yen (甄子丹) with 115 million RMB.

Fan Bingbing Overthrows Jay Chou

In 2004, Fan Bingbing blazed onto the Forbes ranking in the 27th spot. Last year, she was in third place behind Jay Chou and Andy Lau. Since 2007′s Lost in Beijing <苹果>, Bingbing’s films have been regularly featured at international film festivals, making her a popular figure among the international press and luxury brands. Bingbing’s Double Xposure <二次曝光> earned 100 million RMB at the mainland Chinese box office last year, proving the powerful style icon’s draw.

Jay Chou was in the top spot in the 2012 Forbes China Celebrity 100 list, but he had relatively low output this year aside from the release of his Opus 12 <十二新作> album and working on his self-directed musical film, The Rooftop <天台>.

Becoming a father last year, Andy Lau has noticeably slowed down his work schedule to prioritize his family. Despite earning only 47 million RMB, Andy makes regular appearances at international film festivals, boosting his exposure rate.

Shakers and Movers

Huang Xiaoming (黄晓明) has grown from a television idol to film lead, starring in a wider genre of projects. Moving from 23rd place last year, Xiaoming climbed to the 8th spot this year, earning 75.9 million RMB.

Sun Li’s (孫儷) rank ascended the quickest this year. Due to the popularity of mainland drama, The Legend of Zhen Huan <后宫甄嬛传>, Sun Li climbed from last year’s 96th position to this year’s 22nd place with earnings of 30.6 million RMB.

The opportunities for television artists have increased rapidly, boosting the earning power of idol actors. Yang Mi (楊冪) earned 43.7 million RMB in 7th place, Nicky Wu (吳奇隆) earned 36.4 million RMB at 37th place, and Hawick Lau (劉愷威) earned 29.9 million RMB in 49th place.

The growing music industry in mainland has made it a critical market for Taiwanese and Hong Kong singers in recent years. Taiwanese singers such as Jolin Tsai (蔡依林), Leehom Wang (王力宏), May Day ( 五月天), and Elva Hsiao (蕭亞軒) dominated the list due to their significant earnings from concert ticket sales in mainland China.

TVB Artists

Among the TVB artists on the Forbes’ list, Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) is ranked the highest in 48th place. Raymond Lam (林峯) is in the 72nd spot. Myolie Wu (胡杏兒) is the highest ranked Hong Kong female celebrity in 82nd place, surpassing even Carina Lau (劉嘉玲) in the 88th position!

“Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon” Releases Final Trailer

Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon <狄仁傑之神都龍王>, the prequel to the 2010 film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame <狄仁傑之通天帝國>, is slated to open in theaters on September 28. The film recently unveiled its final trailer, giving viewers their first glimpse at the titular “Dragon King.”

The trailer opens with a panoramic view of Luoyang, with a brief voice over by the film’s protagonist Di Renjie, also known as Detective Dee. Portrayed by Taiwanese actor Mark Chao (趙又廷), the 21-year-old detective is the young version of the character played by Andy Lau (劉德華) in Mystery of the Phantom Flame.

Throughout the trailer, Detective Dee encounters the rest of the star-studded cast, including mainland Chinese actor William Feng (馮紹峰) as judicial officer Yuchi Zhenjin, who both helps and competes with the detective; mainland Chinese actor Lin Gengxin (林更新) as doctor Sha Tuozhong, who encounters the mysterious illness that the detective must uncover; Hong Kong actress Carina Lau (劉嘉玲) as Empress Wu; Hong Kong actress Angelababy (楊穎) as beauty Rui Ji, who becomes a target of the Dragon King; and Korean actor Kim Bum (金范) as her lover Yuan Zhen.

Rise of the Sea Dragon will be released in 3D and IMAX, lending a sense of awe to both the underwater scenes and the appearance of the Dragon King. Director Tsui Hark (徐克) shared that he had originally wished for Mystery of the Phantom Flame to be shot in 3D as well, but the lack of manpower forced him to utilize 2D technology.

“At the time, there were fewer than five people in the world who were familiar with and had enough experience with 3D special effects, so we had to drop it,” he said. “But Rise of the Sea Dragon challenges the rarely seen underwater 3D filming, which is even harder than Mystery of the Phantom Flame. We specifically invited an Australian cameraman who has underwater 3D experience for this and brought over the world’s first-rate filming equipment.”

Tsui Hark On “Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon” Underwater Action Sequence

Starring Carina Lau (劉嘉玲), Mark Chao (趙又廷), and Angelababy, Tsui Hark’s (徐克) upcoming fantasy-adventure film Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon <狄仁傑之神都龍王> is due for a September 27 release in Hong Kong. The film about the Tang Dynasty detective Di Renjie serves as a prequel for Tsui Hark’s 2010 film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame <狄仁傑之通天帝國>, which starred Andy Lau (劉德華) in the title role.

At a recent press interview, Tsui Hark discussed the difficulties behind filming the Mandarin-language film, and revealed that the film’s underwater action sequence that took 96 days to shoot was particularly memorable for the cast and the crew. The actors spent six hours underwater in total.

The underwater scene was especially difficult for Mark, who had to fight submerged in water. Due to the high water pressure, Mark’s nose started bleeding halfway, but to not impede the filming schedule, Mark insisted to continue shooting. Although Mark professed that he is a swimmer, having his hands and feet tied underwater was a completely different “swimming” experience.

Angelababy, however, had it much easier than the rest of the cast, as she only had to film a sequence where she slept peacefully underwater. Nonetheless, the experience was no less frightening for the 24-year-old. She said, “Before filming began people asked me if I could swim. I loudly said I could, but later I found out that I had to be bounded inside a sack underwater! That’s different.”

With mixed German and Chinese heritage, Angelababy’s ethnical background attracted Tsui Hark to cast her as Yin Yuji, a courtesan who has an affair with the young tea house master Yuan Zhen, portrayed by South Korean actor Kim Bum.

“An interesting thing about [Angelababy] is that she is a little mixed, and I was curious to how she would appear in a period film,” said Tsui Hark. “In the film, Yin Yuji is from Goguryeo [Ancient Korean state]. Sometimes I wonder if there were actually many people in the Tang Dynasty who were like [Angelababy], being of mixed heritage. Maybe there were people from Xianbei; maybe from Xiyu.”

The underwater scenes employed a series of fantasy sequences. While Mark had to fight underwater, Kim Bum had to kiss the sleeping Angelababy. Mainland actor Lin Gengxin (林更新), who portrays the medic Shatuo Chung, was required to ride on a galloping horse underwater.

Having a scene of such epic scope, did Tsui Hark also go underwater himself? He laughed, “I didn’t! I really wanted to go down also, but if I did, people would rush over to protect me. It would be such a hassle, so forget about that. Also, there weren’t many divers at the scene.”

Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon also stars Feng Shaofeng (馮紹峰) and Hu Dong (胡東), with a guest appearance by Chen Kun (陳坤). After its September 27 release in Hong Kong, it will open in theaters in mainland China and Singapore on September 28.

ANGELABABY LEARNS ABOUT ACTING FROM CARINA LAU

FSF cakepppppppppp...... [lovestruck]

Carina Lau Ka Ling and Angelababy (Yang Ying), Mark Chao (Chiu Yau Ting), Feng Shaofeng yesterday attended the Tsui Hark directed YOUNG DETECTIVE DEE RISE OF THE SEA DRAGON (DIK YUN KIT ji SUN DOH LUNG WONG) Beijing premiere press conference. Tsui Hark said that the Baby played courtesan and the Lau Ka Ling played Wu Zetian's 3 meetings all had mysterious competition. Baby said, "In front of a Best Actress like Sister Ka Ling, I must forget about the pressure. Off camera I appreciate her presence, I have learned alot from her."

As for her favorite guy in the film, Lau Ka Ling said, "I like every one of them, as long as they can investigate the case for him then they are fine." Baby joked, "Then let them take shifts! Monday, Wednesday, and Friday go to Di Renjie, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday go to Yuchi Zhenjin." Lau Ka Ling praised Baby's pretty costumes and her high ability to comprehend. Feng Shaofeng revealed that in a dance scene appearance, Baby's leg was locked onto a high parade float and immobile. After the shoot she could not walk at all and thus was made fun of. Baby joked, "Tsui Hark's women aren't easy to play, the female characters in the film are all very beautiful and have many emotional scenes. The director's standards are very high, actors need to prepare alot more."
