Zuckerberg Surprised That People Are Surprised He’s On Google+
Alexia Tsotsis

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg joining Google+ was at a major media event, with everyone from Forbes to The Daily Mail covering the fact that the founder established a Google+ profile, building Circles that include former Facebooker Dustin Moskovitz and current Facebook CTO Bret Taylor.

While many were doubtful that the real Zuckerberg would join a competing social service, tech blogger Robert Scoble texted Zuckerberg himself to confirm, tweeting out “Name drop moment. Zuckerberg just texted me back. Says “Why are people so surprised that I’d have a Google account?”

In case anyone is still doubting that it is the real Zuck on there, Scoble tells me that Zuckerberg indeed meant Google+ account when he referred to Google account. But the real question is, why are people so surprised that Zuckerberg would chose to be on Google+?

Perhaps the answer lies in the precedent set by Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who seem to have shied away from interacting on Facebook as themselves. (According to Steven Levy, Brin is actually on Facebook as a pseudonym. Google Chairman Eric Schmidt is also rumored to be on the service, independently of when Mike impersonated him).

Page’s and Brin’s behavior aside, plenty of other founders (Myspace Tom for example) have shown that it’s perfectly normal to partake and enjoy competitive services, and that it shouldn’t necessarily be considered an act of espionage. I for one just hope Zuckerberg is more prolific on Google+ than he is on Twitter.

U.S. Agencies Using Tumblr To Increase Transparency
by Kenna McHugh

Governmental agencies are staking some space on Tumblr, the popular microblogging site. The State Department to the National Archives, Peace Corps and General Services Administration are using the site to give people a look at their in-house activities. Roughly 60 percent of Tumblr users are outside of the U.S., granting government blogs such as National Archives and Peace Corps an international audience.

Tumblr helps the Peace Corps share stories from volunteers in 77 countries. Reportedly, the government site gained 980 followers in one week. That’s a lot of stories to share. The Peace Corps blogs are filled with archival photography, which draws in its visitors.

The Peace Corps followed the General Services Administration sanction in deciding to join Tumblr. General Services Administration is setup at USA.gov as a Tumblog. A social media contractor for USA.gov, told The Daily Caller, “We had to negotiate a different terms of service for government employees. By doing that, we opened the door for the State Department, and the Peace Corps, and the National Archives to come in and do their thing.”

Like most governments they have a department for everything or anything. The General Services Administration negotiates terms of service among all social media sites for the U.S. government. Requiring record keeping of all public communication needed to be confirmed with Tumblr. The microblogging site is at the technology level required by the government to store documents. Hence, these sites are doing quite well on Tumblr.

The National Archives over sees quite a few Tumblr blogs that involves such information as a blog about U.S. presidents, current exhibits and a daily document showcase. National Archives have taken to the spirit of social media. The agency decided to make it part of their overall mission to make available all the records the U.S. government holds. With social media, they can now “share more than they have ever been able to before.” What kind of records? Literally billions of records will be place on the site such as documents, photographs, motion pictures and electronic records.

Starting a blog and keeping it going on Tumblr is comparably easy. I am sure we will see more and more agencies joining the social media site.

Apple 'orders 15m iPhone 5s for September
by Shane Richmond

Apple has ordered 15 million iPhone 5s from its Taiwanese suppliers and plans to start shipping in September, according to reports.

iPhone 5 rumours have been intensifying for weeks now and, like this latest one, most seem to suggest an Apple launch some time in the next couple of months.
DigiTimes, which is the main source of most of the recent reports, says that Taiwanese manufacturer Pegatron Technology has just taken an order for 15 million iPhone 5s, to begin shipping in September. It attributes the story to “sources from upstream component makers”.
The report also says that the iPhone 5 “does not have any major update from iPhone 4”. If that’s correct it would suggest that the new phone will be simply a slightly improved iPhone 4, just as the 3GS was a slight improvement on the iPhone 3G, and not a completely overhauled device.
Based on the rumours so far, it’s expected that the new iPhone will contain the same A5 processor that is in the iPad 2 and a better camera, possibly an 8-megapixel sensor rather than the 5-megapixels of the iPhone 4. The new handset will apparently look similar to the iPhone 4. However, some rumours have suggested that Apple will release two iPhone models this year, including a cheaper version of the handset.
Apple does not comment on rumours and is yet to confirm any events for August or September, though it typically holds an iPod-related event every September.

Stunning: Mapping the world with Twitter and Flickr
by Matt Brian

Photographer Eric Fischer has mapping in his blood.

Having previously created maps that only used Flickr geotags and charted racial segregation in the top 40 cities in the United States, Fischer has created a stunning set of maps that chart the locations (geotags) attached to every tweet and Flickr photo.

The maps provide different insights into how both services have been adopted but also what locations are most popular from a photography perspective.

Flickr data is shown in orange and Twitter data is displayed in blue  You can see the other countries he has mapped by visiting Fischer’s Flickr page.

World Map

North America

Europe

It seems the number of Twitter users geotagging their tweets is still very low, whereas the rise in smartphone use has helped assist a boom in photo location tagging. Despite this, it still makes for a very beautiful set of images.

Google’s mysterious Photovine website is live,
and it looks like a social photo-sharing service

by Joel Falconer

A small splash page website has gone up at Photovine.com, a domain and trademark owned by Google.

The frontpage says that “Photovine is a fun way to learn more about your friends, meet new people, and share your world like never before.”

It looks like a social photo sharing app. We’re somewhat surprised to see Google building social services under a different brand name to Google+ after launching the social network in late June, but we’re sure there will be heavy integration.

The focus seems to be on “vines” or collections that express a theme in photography, that connect you with other people interested in those themes. It seems to be oriented towards meeting people you don’t know yet but with whom you share interests, rather than sharing your photos with people you already know.

The design of the page is a big departure for Google, and there is no mention of the company anywhere on the website.

How does Photovine work?
In Photovine, vines connect you with people through the ideas and themes expressed in your photos.
A vine is like a constantly growing family of photos connected through a common caption created by you, your friends, and people all over the world.
Some examples of vines could be: “What Weekends Are Made Of”, “Secret Stuffed Animal”, “Party People”, or, “Love of My Life”.
As people add photos to vines, they tell their own stories about the moments, images, and ideas that define our lives in a way that’s social, creative, and fun.
Start a vine by taking a photo and creating a new caption, or add to an existing vine. Other people will see your vine and join in by adding their own photo, showing their own take on the caption.

Our feeling regarding the network’s angle — on meeting new people rather than sharing with existing friends and family — seems to be echoed in the statement that Photovine is “uber-public” and that “if you wouldn’t want your family to see it, you probably shouldn’t post it.” It won’t be possible to make photos private in Photovine.

There’s bound to be some privacy alarmism, but as long as Photovine is upfront about this, there’s always a need for services that simply cater to public broadcasting.

Update:
Business Insider points out that the privacy policy page mentions that this is a project of Slide, a company that was acquired by Google last year. Despite Google owning it, Slide has continued to release apps since their acquisition that have little to do with Google’s social strategy, so we’ll have to wait and see about that Google+ integration.

Twitter for Android gets multiple accounts and push notifications
by Matthew Panzarino

Twitter has released the latest version of Twitter for Android today, bringing multiple account support and push notifications to the official Twitter app.

The Accounts pane allows you to switch between multiple accounts without logging out, allowing you to post from various accounts or check their streams without logging out. To enable push notifications in the new version of Twitter for Android, go to your account settings and turn on ‘automatic refresh’. Then you can choose to get push updates for Direct Messages, Mentions or Tweets. In a nice touch, the notifications for Mentions can be widened to include anyone, or narrowed to be just the people that you follow.

In addition to multiple account support and push notifications, Twitter has also updated the appearance of the home screen widgets and fixed some bugs. You can grab the latest version of Twitter for Android on the Android Marketplace now.

Amazon to release an Android tablet by October, two Kindles this year
by Matthew Panzarino

According to people familiar with the matter, Amazon has plans to release a tablet computer to compete with Apple’s iPad, reports the WSJ. The company will also release two new Kindle models, a touch-screen device and a cheaper model said to be an improved version of the current kindle.

The tablet will have a 9-inch screen, similar in size to Apple’s iPad, the sources said, and will run on Google’s Android operating system. The design of the tablet is being outsourced to an ‘Asian manufacturer’ and it will not have a camera. Unsurprisingly, the device is said to allow users to easily watch videos, read books and listen to music provided by Amazon’s various digital stores.

The two new Kindle devices will use the same e-ink technology as the current models. If the touch screen model is using e-ink, then it is likely that it will use an infrared touch technology similar to the Barnes & Noble Nook model released in May.

The possibility of an Amazon tablet has been discussed for some time now and many see it as the only company with a chance of rivaling the iPad in popularity. Our own Matt Brian has explored the possibilities of the Amazon tablet and narrowed down its chances of combatting the Apple tablet to leverage of its extensive music, movie and cloud products as well as its long history of retail success. Amazon has proved time and again that it knows how to sell, but with the Kindle, it has proved that it also knows how to ship a consumer electronics product.

With the weight of its extensive retail empire behind it, and the experience gathered from years of Kindle success, do you think that Amazon stands a chance of competing with Apple?
