Within the metaseries, Usagi Tsukino is introduced as a schoolgirl living in 20th
century Tokyo. She is initially depicted as a well-intentioned but underachieving
crybaby who prefers the life of a normal teen-aged Earth girl. Nevertheless, she
continues to fight the evils of her past life and protects the Earth with the Silver
Crystal, as the Champion of Justice, Sailor Moon, which provides for most of the
conflict within both the manga and the anime.
Her journey begins when, while running to school, she sees some neighborhood kids
abusing a cat and rescues it. Later, the cat comes into her room and reveals herself
as a talking cat named Luna, who serves as the mentor for the show. Luna gives her
a magical brooch which helps her transform into Sailor Moon (the "soldier for love
and justice"), and tells her that she is a Soldier who must fight for peace. She
also tells her that she must find the rest of the Soldiers, as well as their princess.
Though at first Usagi is portrayed as a "reluctant heroine"[3](in the anime she often
is rescued by Tuxedo Mask) as time goes on her character grows more confident and
mature. However, she still has her crybaby moments late into the metaseries.
Naoko Takeuchi planned to have the character's hair be blonde as Usagi and silver
whilst in her Sailor Moon form, however she was told by her editor that silver hair
was too plain for cover art. She also considered using pink.[4] The silver hair does
sometimes appear in later artwork, and the concept of the heroines' hair changing
color whilst disguised reappears in Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon.

Usagi lives in Azabu Ju-ban (which is a real district of Tokyo) with her mother
Ikuko Tsukino, her father Kenji Tsukino, and her brother Shingo Tsukino. Usagi's
family is named after the family members of the metaseries' creator, Naoko Takeuchi's
real family.[5] Out of the Sailor Senshi, Usagi and Minako Aino are the only characters
with a conventional nuclear family. Usagi is also the only one known to have a sibling.
She is a poor student, and often comes off as dumb (especially in the anime), though
this is generally played off as being due to naïveté and laziness rather than actual
stupidity. This is because she spends her time eating, playing video games and reading
comics (including RunRun, which published the Sailor V manga in real life) rather
than studying. She is often portrayed as a character that is better at art than science.
Usagi's boyfriend is Mamoru Chiba. Mamoru and Usagi's relationship is a large part
of Usagi's life, as well as the series. The love they share helps Usagi make it through
many challenges. Mamoru becomes Usagi's boyfriend after many trials, and they date
for a long time during the series. Mamoru eventually proposes to Usagi, and they
ultimately get married.
One of the biggest secrets about Sailor Moon is revealed in a number of connecting
episodes in the end of the first series, when she realizes that she is Princess Serenity
(the "crown princess" of the Silver Millennium) reborn. In the second series, Usagi
learns that she will give birth to a daughter (Chibiusa) by her boyfriend and future
husband. Usagi will also become a "sovereign of the Earth", known as Neo-Queen Serenity,
by the 30th century.
Usagi is shown to love sweet foods and is easily distracted by them. She loves cake
so much that it is listed as her hobby in the manga, and her favorite subject is
listed as Home Economics. She is also said to dislike carrots (although she eats
them in the anime), and is terrible at both English and mathematics. In addition
to being a genuine friend, Usagi is extremely good at brown nosing when it's needed
and, of course, crying to get what she wants. She is afraid of dentists and ghosts,
and her greatest dream is to be a bride.[2] Usagi loves rabbits[6] as well as the
colors white and pink, and is apparently a member of the Manga Drawing Club at school,[7]
though her skill level varies widely when shown in the anime.[8] She stands 150 centimeters
(4 ft 11 in) tall,[9] and is blood type O.[2]
The kanji of Usagi's surname translate as "moon" (?, tsuki?) and "field" (?, no?).
Her given name is in hiragana (???, usagi?) and so its meaning is not inherent, but
the word itself means "rabbit" and this is used as a pun frequently throughout the
series, even in her hairstyle. Her entire name is structured as a pun, as the syllable
"no" indicates a possessive, so that her name can also be understood as "Rabbit of
the Moon." This derives from a Japanese folktale about the rabbit that is said to
be visible in the Moon's face, much like the Western Man in the Moon. The English-language
manga gives her the nickname Bunny to partially preserve this pun; many other localizations
use the name Bunny as well. "Usagi" is not a common given name in Japan.
Similarly for the dubbed anime, "Serena" is probably at least in part a play on
the word Selene, a moon goddess in Greek mythology who fell in love with a shepherd
named Endymion. It also derives from the name of the moon princess, which is alternately
either "Selenity" (from Selene) or "Serenity" (from the Sea of Serenity on the moon),
both of which would be rendered in Japanese as /se?eneti/.
In the manga and anime, Mamoru gives Usagi the nickname "Odango," a kind of rice
dumpling, based on her distinctive hair style. At first this is always accompanied
with the suffix "-atama," meaning "head," but as time goes on it is left off. Usagi
hates the name at first, but as they become close it develops into a sign of affection.
Later in the series, other important male (or androgynous) figures in her life, Haruka
and Seiya, adopt the name as well. Because there is no North American equivalent
to odango, the English dub almost always uses "Meatball Head," once "Donut Head,"
and, somewhat incongruously, "Moon Face."
(In an early DiC promotional tape that advertised Sailor Moon to television stations,
Usagi was called Victoria.[11] Another preliminary name that appeared on Kodansha's
English website in an advertisement for the series was said to be Celeste.

Didalam serialnya, Usagi Tsukino diperkenalkan sebagai seorang pelajar [putri yang hidup di Tokyo abad 20an. Gadis ini digambarkan seseorang yang cukup antusias dalam hidupnya dan agak cengeng, hidup sebagai seorang gadis yang normal.
Seorang gadis dengan tinggi 150 cm dan berdarah golongan O, yang lahir 30 Juni dengan bintang Cancer sangat merahasiakan berat badannya. Usagi pertama kali keluar pada Manga Sailormoon pertama sebagai gadis berumur 14 tahun, sejalan dengan manga yang berjalan dia menjadi dewasa dan berumur hingga 1000an sebagai Neo-Ratu Serenity (Neo-Queen Serenity). Selain nama usagi, dia juga memiliki nama alias yaitu Putri Serenity, Neo-ratu Serenity, 'The Messiah', Sovereign of Earth, The Princess, Sailor Rabbit|Kelinci (PGSM), dan ceroboh.
Perjalanan hidupnya yang normal berubah saat dia terlambat menuju ke sekolah. Usagi menemukan seekor kucing hitam|black cat] yang kemudian dia selamatkan. Dari pertemuan tersebut, perjalanan Usagi menjadi Sailor Moon dimulai.
Kemudian sang kucing mendadak mendatangi Usagi di kamarnya, sang kucing memperkenalkan bernama Luna yang mencari putri bulan. Kemudian memberikan alat perubahan yang membantu Usagi menjadi seorang Sailor Moon (Prajurit pelindung Cinta dan Keadilan).
Sailor Moon kemudian diminta mencari para prajurit lainnya dan putri bulan yang hilang. Pada saat menyelamatkan Naru, dia bertemu dengan pria misterius yang menamakan dirinya 'Topeng Tuxedo'. Topeng Tuxedo inilah yang sering sekali menyelamatkan sang gadis malang seraya menghinanya.
Walau pada awalnya Usagi adalah seorang gadis cengeng, perlahan tapi pasti sejalan dengan berbagai perang yang harus dilewati olehnya dan temannya, dia menjadi seseorang yang dewasa.
**Naoko Takeuchi (Pengarang Sailor moon) mengkonsepkan Usagi memiliki rambut berwarna silver/perak seperti konsepnya sebagai putri Bulan tetapi editor menyatakan hal tersebut terlalu tipikal. Sehingga digunakan warna pink. Sejalan dengan serial, warna yang digunakan menjadi kuning atau Emas. Tetapi hal tersebut berubah saat muncul di PGSM.
Usagi hidup di Azabu Juban (dimana ini adalah distrik nyata di Tokyo) dengan kedua orang tuanya (Ikuko Tsukino dan Kenji Tsukino) bersama dengan sang adik Shingo Tsukino. Dimana nama yang digunakan adalah nama yang sama dengan nama keluarga Naoko. Di luar itu, keluarga Minako Ai juga mirip dengan Usagi. Dalam serial, hanya keluarga Usagi yang memiliki 2 anak, sedangkan yang lainnya adalah anak tunggal.
Usagi merupakan pelajar yang payah dan terkadang di anggap dungu. Hal tersebut ditunjukkan dengan jelas pada anime dan PGSM. Hal tersebut ditunjukkan dengan kemalasannya yang suka bermain-main game dan membaca manga terutama RunRun ( yang menerbitkan Sailor V dalam kehidupan nyata) dibandingkan belajar.
Berteman dengan Ami juga disengaja agar nilainya dapat naik walau berujung dia bermain-main. Hal tersebut diperparah dengan adanya Ai yang merupakan kembaran tak indentik dari dirinya. Bersama-sama Ai yang malas dan makanan juga suasana yang sering diberikan Makoto membuat Usagi menjadi-jadi. Walau demikian dia dapat lulus dan mendapat SMU yang bagus bersama para temannya yang setia.
Pacar Usagi adalah Mamoru Chiba, pertemuan pertama mereka adalah saat Usagi menuju ke rumah Naru (Sailor Moon 1). Kemudian pertemuan-pertemuan berikutnya terjadi pada keadaan yang tak mengenakkan, Usagi menjadi membenci pria yang sok dewasa ini. Berjalan dengan waktu, Sailor Moon mengetahui Mamoru adalah Topeng Tuxedo dan merupakan titisan Endymoon. Terbawa pada takdir yang sama, Usagi dan Mamoru menjadi kekasih hingga Mamoru melamar dia pada sebuah kesempatan yang indah.
Chibiusa atau dipanggil dengan Usagi Tsukino SL (Small Lady) hadir dari masa depan dan menemuinya untuk mengambil Kristal Perak. Dari anak inilah diketahui masa depan Usagi dan Mamoru yang indah dan memiliki anak yaitu Chibiusa. Juga takdir Usagi yang menjadi penguasa Bumi bersama dengan raja Endimon di abad 30.
Usagi sangat suka pada makanan manis dan sering sekali tampak memakannya. Salah satu makanan favorit ini sering dibuat Mako. Walau dia adalah Usagi (kelinci), dia membenci makan wortel tetapi terlihat memakan wortel dalam anime. Dia sangat suka pada kelinci yang mana merupakan maskot dia saat kemana-mana. Dalam salah satu cerita dia adalah anggota dari Klub Menggambar Manga disekolahnya. Impian terbesarnya adalah menjadi pengantin cantik.
Usagi sangat membenci hantu (walau yang dihadapi olehnya lebih berbahaya daripada hantu yang ditakutinya) dan dokter gigi. Sebaliknya Rei adalah pendeta yang sangat ahli dalam menangani para hantu sehingga Usagi lebih takut padanya terutama saat pertama kali bertemu. Seperti halnya para gadis yang kurang rajin, dia agak lemah pada matematika dan Bahasa Inggris (walau nama serangan yang diberikan kebanyakan memakai bahasa Inggris).
